The Spokane String Quartet opens its 40th season with three outstanding string quartets celebrating three centuries of chamber music with influences ranging from the cello-playing King Frederick of Prussia to the 20th century’s foremost patron of chamber music, Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge.

The Spokane String Quartet will make its first appearance at St. John’s Episcopal Cathedral with the Gonzaga University Chamber Chorus and the Cathedral Kantorei Soloists. Twentieth-century composers John Tavener, Jake Runstad, Arvo Pärt and Tarik O’Regan bring an exciting element to the string quartet performance with a chamber choir and soloists in the fabulous cathedral.

Martin Woldson Theater at The Fox
The Spokane String Quartet performance will feature artwork inspired by the music projected on the big screen at Martin Woldson Theater at The Fox. The music of Mikalojus Ciurlionis, a Lithuanian painter and composer, will feature his artwork and Debussy’s string quartet will be illustrated by artwork by impressionist painters.

The Spokane String Quartet features a quartet by Felix Mendelssohn and one by his sister Fanny. Fanny was a pianist and composer who wrote more than 460 pieces of music. A number of her songs were originally published under her brother Felix’s name. Felix was a composer, pianist, organist, and conductor who was a leader in the early romantic period.

The Spokane String Quartet closes its season with works by two masters of the string quartet, Dmitri Shostakovich and Ludwig van Beethoven. Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 11 was finished in 1966 in Moscow. It was premiered by the Beethoven Quartet. The Beethoven String Quartet 14 was composed in 1826 and was his favorite of the late quartets. Eric Ewazen’s Quintet for Trumpet and Strings will feature Spokane Symphony trumpeter, Eric Moe.
