Spokane’s premier youth ballet presents two entertaining ballets for the entire family. “Soirée Musicale” is a light classical ballet filled with comedy, romance, and drama! The story revolves around a birthday party attended by guests including two handsome young men who are distant cousins from Spain, two eccentric maiden aunts, and even a fortune telling gypsy! Hearts are broken, but true love prevails in the end. This ballet is based on the British ballet of the same name with a score by Benjamin Britten. This staging was conceived by Artistic Director, Kristen Potts.
Next, we take the audience on a trip back in time for Phaedra Jarrett’s version of “The Little Mermaid” set in the 1980’s with music from that decade. This ballet does not include singing lobsters or a castle. This little mermaid leaves the sea to pursue a high school quarterback she has saved from drowning. She learns many lessons about life in the real world high school. Phaedra artfully weaves this classic tale with the cultural elements and styles of the 80s…a nostalgic trip for many!
Over 70 talented young dancers are joined by guest artist Benjamin Tucker of Nevada Dance Theatre who returns in the roles of Marco in “Soirée Musicale” and the Quarterback in “The Little Mermaid”. Also guesting this year is Mauricio Vergara who dances professionally with Ballet Tucson. He will dance the role of Alfonso, Marco’s younger brother.
