Spokane Symphony Classics: The Russian Soul

Eckart Preu, conductor ‚óŹ Benjamin Beilman, violin

Glinka's Kamarinskaya pioneered the symphonic arrangement of Russian folk tunes. "The Russian symphonic school is all in Kamarinskaya as the whole oak is in the acorn," wrote Tchaikovsky. In his own Violin Concerto, the virtuosity of the soloist Benjamin Beilman sparkles against a lyrical backdrop; an exquisite slow movement is followed by a folk-inspired finale that serves up a dazzling array of pyrotechnics. Shostakovich's studiously apolitical Ninth Symphony is thoroughly engaging, an endless comedy of musical wit. Come an hour early for the pre-concert lecture.
