Astoria School of Ballet: Peter and the Wolf

Tickets for the events at the Liberty Theater are no longer available through Ticketswest.  Please visit to purchase tickets.

The Astoria School of Ballet performs a split bill with two joyous children's ballets, choreographed by Margaret Wall and presented in cooperation with The Liberty Theatre.

Sergei Prokofiev wrote the story and composed the music for Peter and the Wolf in 1936. It was written in two weeks for a children's theatre in Moscow. Prokofiev wrote the music as a child's introduction to the orchestra with each character being represented by an instrument or group of instruments. Peter and the Wolf was an immediate success and continues to be enjoyed today by children all over the world.

Camille Saint-Saens, the famous 19th-century French composer, was usually quite serious about his music. However, he proved he had a sense of humor when he wrote Carnival of the Animals. Saint-Saens was a teacher in a music school when he decided to play a joke on his students - a musical joke, of course. A series of 13 musical vignettes representing each animal was the result.
